Jin Shin Jyutsu self help to ease the pressure of life

Life asks a lot of us. Our daily life is filled with responsibilities, decisions, expectations, worries, and constant change that brings uncertainty. Even when ‘all is well’, there can be an underlying pressure to keep up, figure things out, take care of others, and somehow remain calm in the midst of it all.

Sometimes that pressure can show up emotionally as fear, frustration, indecision, or restlessness. Or it can show up physically as tension in the chest, shallow breathing, tight shoulders, or imbalances in the body.

The good news is that knowing how to use Jin Shin Jyutsu can help ease the pressure we have to deal with in everyday life.

A special Safety Energy Lock

In Jin Shin Jyutsu there are 26 Safety Energy Locks, or SELS. These are energy sites located appropriately on different areas of the body, depending on their meaning and function. There are 26 on the left side, and 26 mirror images on the right side.

Today, the star of the show is Safety Energy Lock 22. It is located at the base of the left and right collarbones.

Very often, a lot of tension builds up at SEL 22, and it is of vital importance to keep this area free. After all, our 144,000 energy functions gather here and are then distributed out to the rest of the body. So all our energy goes through this area.

When SEL 22 is not in harmony, we might experience mental, emotional, digestive and/or physical tension and stress.

SEL 22 is also associated with decompression, respiratory support, the vascular system, fear, and blood pressure projects. The vascular system refers to the blood vessels and circulation, so this can include things like blood pressure, circulation, and the health of the arteries and veins*.

So isn’t it wonderful that we have Jin Shin Jyutsu to help us help ourselves?

Safety Energy Lock 22: Complete Adaptation

Safety Energy Lock 22 came into being meaning ‘Complete Adaptation’. It harmonises so many functions, but in essence, it can help us BE Happy and Content wherever we are, whenever we are and no matter what is going on around us.

Complete adaptation does not mean that we pretend everything is perfect. It does not mean we ignore discomfort, sadness, or uncertainty. Rather, it points us toward an inner state where we can ease more into the moment. Instead of fighting life, we begin to flow with it. Instead of saying, ‘I cannot be okay until everything changes’, SEL 22 reminds us that there is a place within us that can find balance right now.

This makes SEL 22 especially relevant when we feel pressured by life. So many of us carry pressure around the collarbones, chest, neck, and shoulders. This area can tighten up really fast when we’re anxious or afraid. Holding SEL 22 is a simple way to allow space back into the body and mind.

Such an easy and natural exercise

To harmonise SEL 22, place your hands at the base of the collarbones as shown below.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Exercise 1 to relieve pressure

Another way is to cross your hands and hold the right SEL 22 with the left hand and the left SEL 22 with the right hand. You can move your hands all along the base of the collarbone to the joint where the arm meets the shoulder. It can get very tense in there as well.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Exercise 2 to relieve pressure

There’s no need to use any pressure. Simply relax the hands, and hold.

Holding either INDEX FINGER, which is related to FEAR and can also be used to harmonise SEL 22.

You can also practice another exercise, using two complementary Safety Energy Locks to SEL 22: SEL 20 and SEL 21. For that, see: Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help to Harmonise the Mind.
