Jin Shin Jyutsu for overwhelm and mental stress
There are many times in life when we can feel totally overwhelmed and just can’t think straight. I’m sure it’s happened to most of us: you’re in a hurry to get somewhere, you’re late, late, late, and you can’t find your car keys. Aaargh! The stress builds, your mind starts spinning, and there’s nowhere to go. Literally. It’s exactly for moments like these that this simple Jin Shin Jyutsu hold for overwhelm and mental stress can help so much. And it’s useful for far more than just missing car keys!

You already do this naturally!
Have you ever noticed yourself doing this? You place one or both hands on your forehead. Maybe when you’re trying to remember something… when you’re concentrating… when you’re stressed… or just trying to make sense of things.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, we call this area on the forehead Safety Energy Lock 20.
When we place our hands or fingers here, it can help bring clarity, awareness, and calm busy mental activity. The interesting thing is, you already use SEL 20 naturally. But if you start using it consciously, even when you’re not stressed, it can also help with memory, insight, and a fresh perspective.
You know those moments when there seems to be no solution to a situation? Sometimes holding SEL 20 can help you see things differently, so you can find a way forward.
Simply hold your forehead
You can place one hand across your forehead or use both hands: left hand on the left side and right hand on the right side. No pressure is needed.

Just place your hands and allow yourself a moment, to STOP! LISTEN! SEE WITHIN!, as Mary Burmeister says.

If I’m sitting at a table, I often rest my elbows on it so I can completely relax my arms while holding both left and right SEL 20 comfortably.
For me, one of the loveliest things about this Jin Shin Jyutsu hold is that it can help us step out of overwhelm… and into a little more stillness surprisingly quickly.
