Jin Shin Jyutsu: Universal Art to Boost Energy and Balance Emotions

Jin Shin Jyutsu® is a Universal Art of harmonising the energy in the body by using the fingers and hands. It boosts energy levels, calms the mind, balances the emotions and much, much more.

Even if we are not consciously aware of it, we use this Art in our daily lives to help ourselves – all we need to do is look at people on television: politicians, and celebrities on chat shows for instance, to see that they are all practising this Art to help themselves stay calm and energised. They will hold certain fingers, or place their hands on specific places on their body.

However, this Art works really dynamically when we become AWARE of what we are doing. Even better, the effects are cumulative, so the more we practice the better we can feel.

The principles and KEYS of Jin Shin Jyutsu are as old as we are. The KEYS were rediscovered by Master Jiro Murai in Japan over 100 years ago. He studied these KEYS and how the energy pathways ‘flow’ through the body, and fully dedicated himself to understanding the causes of disharmony. Using this system of KEYS on the body, he learned how to correct, or adjust, the energy when it was ‘compromised’, and called this Art that he developed Jin Shin Jyutsu (The Art of The Creator through Compassionate Man).

I use the word compromise (‘unable to function optimally’) to explain the different situations that can arise; as energies in the body could stagnate, or move in reverse, or get mixed up with other energies when they shouldn’t. There could also be an overload (too much) or a depletion (too little). There could even be a combination of these.

So as Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioners, we aim to facilitate the body’s own innate ability to correct and adjust the energy along the pathways. This is also what Acupuncturists, and those working with the subtle energies in the body, aim to do.

One of Master Jiro Murai’s most dedicated students was Mary Burmeister (nee Iino), born in Seattle, Washington, of Japanese descent. She introduced Jin Shin Jyutsu to the West in the early 1960s when she started her practice. Later, she taught the Art to others.

There are two main aspects to Jin Shin Jyutsu: one is that we can receive a session from another (usually a practitioner), the other is that we can give MYSELF a session as self help.

This is what makes Jin Shin Jyutsu so marvellous: we can apply the method of self help to ourselves no matter how young or old we are. Children inherently know this when they suck their thumb; by doing that they help boost their energies and bring balance to their whole being.

I remember I had a client who came to see me years ago. She was a young student at the time, feeling very stressed about her exams. As a child she had always sucked her thumb, and never really ‘unlearned’ that behaviour. So she found great solace in sucking her thumb as an adult to manage her stress. I suggested that instead of sucking her thumb she could hold either thumb for a few minutes with the opposite hand, and that would have a grounding and calming effect on her. She was quite amazed at the results, and that something so simple could be so effective.

So that brings us neatly to the basis of Self Help in Jin Shin Jyutsu. The truth is that by simply holding our Thumbs and Fingers for a few minutes each, every day, we can help harmonise all 144,000 of our energy functions. Better yet, the effect of holding each thumb and finger is cumulative so the more we hold, the better we can feel.

Many people often ask the question: ‘How long should I hold for?’  Now, there aren’t any hard and fast rules. Mary says in her self help books: ‘For a few minutes, more or less.’ But if you really want a time guideline then you could hold each thumb and finger for 5 minutes each. If you hold all the fingers of one hand, you’ll have done 25 minutes. If you do all 10 fingers, 50 minutes. That’s a good, thorough, self help session for the whole being. Moreover, if you close your eyes you’ll feel how the stresses just start ‘melting away’, as Mary said. Once you become more attuned to your body, you will naturally hold each finger for the length of time that feels ‘right’ for you.

Below are the basic self help finger holds with some explanation of what ‘issues’ holding each finger can help. Hold whichever side feels more comfortable.

Jin Shin Jyutsu: A Pro-Active Approach to Health and Wellbeing

Jin Shin Jyutsu Health Wellbeing

If we can eat and drink what our bodies need, exercise regularly, manage stress and sleep well to aid recovery, then we are well on our way to helping the body maintain balance and harmony.

However, how can we be more pro-active about our health and wellbeing, especially as we get older?

In the film Billions in Change, Sir David Lane, a foremost scientist and expert in the field of cancer talks about how important it is to change our approach:

“…what we tend to do is think of ourselves as well until we’re ill and that’s the wrong way around. We need to be thinking about maintaining health as a much more pro-active process.

Everybody wants a shortcut; maybe I’ll take this vitamin and I’ll be better.

What we need to do is think about fundamentals, like the blood, the circulation – that’s what your heart’s doing, that’s what’s taking nutrients around the body, that’s what’s critical for eliminating waste products.

So clearly, poor circulation is the basis of a lot of illness. So anything that can help people to improve their health is very, very important…

You have to go outside the system. The current system educates people to behave in a certain way; you get ill, you go to the doctor, the doctor is a god-like figure, the doctor’s going to save you…that’s how it works. Instead of thinking: oh, I’m part of this process…I can’t be passive, I should be active.

It’s about that shift in thinking; to think about new ways of doing things.”

So I ask the question again – apart from providing the right nourishment for the body, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly – how can we be more pro-active about our health and wellbeing in a way that is accessible and effective?

Well, each one of us has a unique system of ‘energy sites’ on the body which we can work with by knowing where to place our hands.

So let me give you an example of how this energy system works.

I’d like to establish at the outset that left to its own devices, our incredibly intelligent body is capable of healing and repairing itself.

If you cut yourself, for instance, your body will jump into action to isolate and heal the area affected. If it’s a deep cut, then it will take some time to heal.

However, if you place your hands in a particular way, you will greatly help speed up the healing process (that’s because of the way the energy moves through your hands).

In my experience, when you apply Jin Shin Jyutsu to a wound, the healing really kicks in after a few minutes.

Over the last 17+ years, I (and my clients ) have experienced how Jin Shin Jyutsu also speeds up the removal of toxins and wastes from the body and greatly helps to support the immune, lymphatic and circulatory systems – thereby assisting the body to clean, regenerate and repair itself, as well as helping to clear stressors that cause discomfort and disease.

There are many clinical studies that show the positive effects of Jin Shin Jyutsu on the body.

For instance, a study at the University of California showed that Jin Shin Jyutsu helps manage and clear mucositis.

As noted in the Annals of Oncology: “Oral and gastrointestinal mucositis due to cancer therapies such as high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation continues to be an important clinical problem.”

Another study conducted in 2012 at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center with cancer patients, found that “in each session patients experienced significant improvement in the areas of pain, stress, and nausea with the first visit and in subsequent visits as well.”

The study was led by Jin Shin Jyutsu Integrative Practitioner Jennifer Bradley who commented: “I was pleased to see quantitatively the improvements that patients noted in these primary areas of discomfort. It was interesting to note that regardless of age, sex or diagnosis, cancer patients received a statistically significant improvement in the side effects from treatment. It is encouraging to note that Jin Shin Jyutsu made improvements in these areas without adding additional unwanted effects that so often occur with medication interventions.”

I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, saying here that Jin Shin Jyutsu is a substitute for medical diagnosis, attention and/or treatment.

What I am saying, though is that it is very important to encourage a pro-active attitude and approach to maintain optimum health and wellbeing, especially when we are well.

That, in my view, is much more empowering than just thinking of ourselves as well, until we’re not, and Jin Shin Jyutsu offers us that very elegant possibility.

Jin Shin Jyutsu®: An Art Available to All

Flowsforlife Jin Shin Jyutsu Trees 400

When I meet new people and they ask me: ‘What do you do?’ and I say that I am a Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner, they invariably look at me blankly and say: ‘Oh, I’ve never heard of that.’ To which I answer: ‘It’s an Art of healing, the principles of which are as old as mankind and it was rediscovered in Japan about a hundred years ago.’

Then they, quite rightly, ask: ‘Oh, is it like Reiki?’ and I say (and this is my own perspective since I have studied and practised both): ‘Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki both work with subtle energies, but there the similarity ends for me.’

If they are still interested, I proceed to explain that, as JSJ Practitioners (working hands-on the body over clothing), our aim is to harmonise the life energy (and all 144,000 energy functions) by using a system of 26 energy sites, found on the left and right sides which are mirror images of each other, so we have, in fact, access to 52 ‘energy sites’ (officially called Safety Energy Locks or SELs for short). We also make use of the fingers and toes which, when held, activate and regenerate all those energy functions.

The next question is often: ‘Do you use pressure, or is it like a massage?’ So I show them that the touch we use is gentle – no pressure, massage or manipulation is needed: ‘This is a dynamic touch therapy. As we connect with the specific locations of the 26 energy sites, we facilitate the body’s own healing ability. The body is capable of healing itself, but this really does speed up the process. In essence, it relaxes, rebalances, repairs and regenerates the whole system, on every level – physically, mentally, emotionally, and, yes, spiritually.’

Usually the reaction at this point goes something like this: ‘That sounds fascinating.’ And I say: ‘Yes, it is. The most wonderful thing about Jin Shin Jyutsu is that it is available to each and every one of us! We all have the ability to use this Art in our everyday lives, and all I ‘do’ is introduce the awareness of it by offering individual sessions, talks and self help classes. In fact, there are many practitioners around the world who offer self help classes. The self help is simple and FUN to learn. It’s as easy as holding a finger!’

And so the journey of ‘Getting to KNOW (Help) MYSELF’ begins…

The Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu® Physio-Philosophy

WHAT IS IT?
Jin Shin Jyutsu® physio-philosophy is an Art of harmonising the life energy in the body by using the fingers and hands (over clothing) on specific energy sites. The principles of this Art are as old as mankind, researched and developed in Japan about 100 years ago by Master Jiro Murai. I often describe it as ‘Acupuncture with the fingers’ but no pressure, massage or manipulation of the muscles is necessary.

It alleviates stress/tensions, eliminates fatigue, relieves pain, balances emotions, boosts the immune system and promotes mental alertness. The treatment is a pleasurable experience, generally one of deep relaxation, and the benefits are usually felt immediately.

Jin Shin Jyutsu employs 26 energy sites or ‘safety energy locks’ along energy pathways that feed life into our bodies. When one or more of the paths become blocked, the resulting stagnation can disrupt the local area and eventually dis-harmonise the complete path of energy flow. Holding these energy locks in combination can bring balance to mind, body, and spirit.

WHAT CAN IT HELP WITH?
Jin Shin Jyutsu releases tensions and acts as a deep cleaner: it detoxifies, re-balances and re-generates the whole being. As there are no contraindications, it is safe for children, pregnant mothers, the elderly and infirm. It is also a great support for people on medication and those undergoing cancer or other treatments. It can alleviate stress-related conditions and I have found it particularly helpful for dealing with physical and mental exhaustion, a run-down immune system, anxieties, as well as pain and discomfort.

Astrid Kauffmann, BSc, TIDHA (Dip Holistic Aromatherapy) and Jin Shin Jyutsu® Practitioner
I became interested in Jin Shin Jyutsu after using some simple self help exercises to clear my migraine headaches in 1998. I am a trained Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner and have shared my passion and knowledge of this Art since 2001 via treatments, talks and self help classes.

What some of my clients say after treatments
“I feel so refreshed” “The pain is gone”
“I slept very well last night” “I feel more energetic”
“Colours look so vivid now” “I feel cleansed”
“I feel calmer and more mentally alert”

Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied by a practitioner or as self help.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is the Getting to KNOW (Help) Myself

When we start to work with the energy of the body, we realise that the physical follows the energy. We can read the body, by knowing what the energy is doing.

Case in point. Maria is 75 and she has a very hunched back. She can’t stand up straight anymore. One would say that this is something that ‘happens’ in ‘old age’.  However, another story unfolds when we add an understanding of the energy body to the equation.

The main energy (main central) moves down our front (exhale) and up our back (inhale).

Let’s say that when Maria was younger (years younger), something frightened her and she stopped breathing properly. She became afraid of letting go, of exhaling the dirt, dust, grease and grime.

As she became afraid of exhaling, the energy down the front of her body became tenser and started ‘pulling her down’, at the same time creating a safe, protective space for her chest and her heart.

‘The body is the demonstration of your thinking’.  – Postures of the body give the state of the heart and the mind.

The Ancient Healing Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu allows us to: 1. move through our disharmonies at the point when they HAVE NOT YET TAKEN HOLD IN THE PHYSICAL, 2. REPAIR THE BODY when disharmonies have taken hold in the physical and 3. Effect LIFESTYLE CHANGES by harmonising attitudes like Worry, Fear, Anger, Grief and Trying Tos that created the disharmonies in the first place.

All this through the process of GETTING TO KNOW (HELP) MYSELF.

What is Jin Shin Jyutsu? Part 2

Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient and gentle Japanese healing art that is used to harmonise the breath. By harmonising the breath, we harmonise our mind, body and soul – Jin Shin Jyutsu literally means ‘The Art of the Creator through the Man of Knowing and Compassion.’

Jin Shin Jyutsu teaches us how to rediscover our innate wisdom to KNOW (Help) MYSELF. It can be practiced as self help, or one can receive treatment from a practitioner.

People often ask me: ‘How does Jin Shin Jyutsu WORK?’ I was thinking of another analogy just yesterday: Take a house with light switches. Every house has light switches, but in the dark, if you don’t know the house you have to first find the light switch before you can turn it on. Our body is the house, and we have 26 ‘light switches’ on the right side and left side of the body (they are mirror images of each other). When we know where they are, we can touch/hold them to ‘turn them on’, thereby getting the ‘electricity’ or energy to FLOW. Acupuncture for instance, achieves this with needles. In Jin Shin Jyutsu it is achieved with the fingers and hands.

What is Jin Shin Jyutsu? Part 1

Jin Shin Jyutsu, ‘The Art of the Creator through the Man of Knowing and Compassion’ is an ancient healing art which was rediscovered in Japan by Master Jiro Murai in the early 1900s.

Introduction
I often describe Jin Shin Jyutsu as ‘Acupuncture with the fingers’, but it involves no manipulation, pressure or massage, so it is safe for every body from 0-100+ years of age. This ancient healing Art harmonises and balances the life energy in the body by using the fingers and hands (over clothing) to alleviate symptoms of discomfort and disharmony. This ‘energy medicine’ is a gentle, yet powerful tool for health and well-being which is simple to learn and has immediate benefit. Learning Jin Shin Jyutsu engages one in self study, self help. Through the process of ‘Now Know MYSELF’ we recognize the wisdom of the body, and we learn to interpret the messages provided and utilize them to restore balance. Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied by a practitioner, but it is also powerful and effective as self help.

The Jin Shin Jyutsu Treatment (by a Practitioner)
The client lies face up and fully clothed. The JSJ practitioner uses light touch on the body over particular energy sites called
Safety Energy Locks along energy pathways. Two energy sites are held simultaneously until the tension or congestion is released. Then one hand is moved to another energy site, and along areas of the body where there is tension. Each energy site can take seconds or minutes to release and re-energise. Treatments generally take 45 minutes to an hour. Repeated treatments depend on the individual and the particular situation. Often it is for no particular ‘problem’, but as a preventative ‘tune up’ or just to treat oneself to a nurturing, relaxing and revitalising hour. After several Jin Shin Jyutsu treatments, a person can really feel the difference and has a sense of real balance and vitality, so they are better able to distinguish when they are out of balance.

Self Help Holds with Jin Shin Jyutsu
Involves the same procedure as above, only difference is that one places ones own hands on the body.
