“We come into the world with an exhalation, to clear and empty us, so that we can receive. We never ‘take’ a breath. We ‘receive’ a breath.” – From The Touch of Healing by Alice Burmeister

On Wednesday, 3 June (3.6) we aim to harmonise all our individual energy functions – and as we do that, we help restore balance to the collective energy as well. The more of us there are, the more we create a rainbow of harmony across the world.

Will you join us for this fifth Global Jin Shin Jyutsu Event to Restore Balance by using the fingers and the breath?

Join us any time that is convenient for you on June 3, 2015, where ever you are in the world:

Summary of Exercise for the Fifth Global Event on June 3

1) Wrap the right hand around the left thumb. Relax the hands.
Exhale, then inhale comfortably three times as you hold…
Then wrap the right hand around the left index finger and exhale, then inhale 3x
then do the same for the left middle finger, ring finger, little finger and left center of palm.

2) Wrap the left hand around the right thumb. Relax the hands.
Exhale/inhale comfortably three times as you hold…
Then wrap the left hand around the right index finger and exhale/inhale 3x
then do the same for the right middle finger, ring finger, little finger and right center of palm.

When you finish holding all the fingers and palms you will have exhaled/inhaled 36 breaths.

THE 36 CONSCIOUS DIVINE BREATHS AND HOLDING YOUR FINGERS
as explained by Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner Pam Makie who is based in New York City:

ATTITUDES are the keys to our harmony with the universe. Each Finger, Thumb and Palm are the simple unlocking KEYS to harmonizing attitudes. Anytime you need to harmonize any attitude, lightly hold the entire corresponding finger, thumb, or palm with your opposite hand. For example if you feel worried hold your entire thumb, if you are angry hold your entire middle finger, etc. See the attitude and finger connection in the illustration.

BE THE BREATH. THE 36 CONSCIOUS DIVINE BREATHS (JIN SHIN JYUTSU)

(3+6=9. Number 9 is New Beginning.) As Mary Burmeister said: “In this Breath, I am One of a kind. There can be no competing, comparing, judging, labeling, or being judged.”

Years ago, while teaching a Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help Class, I suddenly realized if you hold each finger, thumb and palm for 3 conscious divine breaths each, it adds up to 36. A good way to keep count, and it’s also a new beginning (9)! It becomes a nice little simple but powerful “meditation” for daily use.

So combining this with some of my meditation practices this evolved:

Sit in a straight back chair such as a dining room or kitchen chair. Take off shoes, and place your feet flat on the floor. Relax. As I remember Mary Burmeister saying, “Drop your shoulders. Be the dropping of the shoulders”. Sit comfortably straight. First concentrate on your feet…see them getting bigger and more “open”, more grounded/connected to the earth. They will begin to feel expanded and warmer. Observe how it feels.

NOW FOR THE DEEP CONSCIOUS breaths. WITH AWARENESS first EXHALE FULLY. Now, keeping the awareness of you feet, INHALE (through your nose) from your solar plexus up completely filling your lungs from the bottom up. On the gentle complete inhale feel the expansion of the hips, pelvic girdle and rib cage. Keep shoulders relaxed. Then EXHALE deeply and completely through your nose. BE AWARE of your breath. BE the EXHALE. Are you exhaling and inhaling completely, are you breathing in/out from all areas of your lungs? To check your breathing at first, it may help to keep your hand on your solar plexus to feel the rise (inhale) and the fall (exhale) of that area. Think of inhaling up the back, and exhaling down the front.

Now you are aware of the basics of breathing CONSCIOUS DIVINE BREATHS.

To start the 36 breaths use your opposite hand to separately hold the thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger, little finger, and palm. Count 3 BREATHS while holding each. Now repeat with the other hand. Observe how you feel after.

Observe the cumulative effect from practicing this daily. As Mary Burmeister said, “Be your own Testimony”.

The Universal Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu contributed the awareness of the 36 Conscious Divine Breaths, and the attitudes connected with the fingers when we are not in optimal harmony, and to hold these fingers.

Not only are you becoming aware of your breath, you also are harmonizing any attitudes of imbalance.

This is a “complicatedly simple” but very powerful way to help yourself.

When not doing this exercise, you will find yourself breathing “better”. Also, if you are fearful you can simply hold your index finger without utilizing the entire exercise. BE YOUR OWN TESTIMONY. This is an art. You are the artist.

Thanks in advance for practising this exercise with us.

Harmonize the world one set of hands at a time, a day at a time!

Self Help to Relieve Emotional Upset

Jin Shin Jyutsu emotional upsetWhenever I feel emotionally upset or stressed and need to
calm down, I do this great Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help Hold:
I cross my arms and hold my upper arms.

Wrap right hand/fingers over the left upper arm,
and wrap the left hand/fingers over the right upper arm.
Close your eyes and breathe in and out until you feel that
your sense of calm is restored.

All you need is a bit of privacy and a few minutes to restore
calm and perspective… Try it out.

This JSJ hold also clears the chest, the digestive system and releases tension in the back.

And when you feel calmer, use the Donna Eden zip up technique to ‘ground’ the calm: all you need to do is ‘zip up’ your chakras from the base (pubic bone) all the way up the front to the mouth and ‘lock’.

This will protect your energy from outside attack and help you remain more grounded and strong.

Donna Eden’s zip up technique is very useful if you live in the city – do it before you go out, and again when you come back home. Energy Medicine by Donna Eden is available here

A Self Help Hold for Emergencies

In any ACUTE emergency situation I  immediately go for the EMERGENCY hold. I describe emergency situations which involve breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, sudden malaise, abdominal cramps, menstrual cramps…

Needless to say, this hold is by no means meant to substitute medical attention.

Jin Shin Jyutsu emergencies 2 The hold: Place the palms of your hands on the insides of the knees. This hold can also be applied to another and can be done with arms crossed or not – I personally like crossing my arms., but experiment with which way feels more comfortable and effective for you.

The energy site on the inside of the knee is called the ‘One’ – Prime Mover.

We have 26 energy sites on the right and left sides of the body which are mirror images of each other. Number 1 energy site (or ‘Safety Energy Locks’ as they are called in Jin Shin Jyutsu), are located on the insides of the knees, and are helpful in this kind of emergency because they MOVE THE ENERGY DOWN, and assist in keeping it moving, connecting our head with our toes and vice versa.

I have used the Ones in the few acute situations that I have experienced over the years, and it took a few minutes for the pain and discomfort to subside, but I held on, and I have never had recurrences.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu to Open the Throat

Question: Hi Astrid – We have the book of Alice Burmeister ‘The Touch of Healing’. We also attended an introduction morning for JSJ. My wife has a particular problem with her esophagus, sometimes her food just does not go down. She has to lay down on the floor for some time to get things back to normal. Is there any flow and/or SEL that you can recommend to ease this problem? – from NZ

Answer: In a situation like this – ACUTE situation that is, I would immediately go for the EMERGENCY hold (choking, breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, sudden malaise) which is to place the hands on the inside of the knees (SEL 1). Can be with arms crossed or not – I personally like crossing my arms.  The ones are to be used in this kind of emergency because they MOVE THE ENERGY DOWN. Also helpful for this situation is to cross the arms and place the hands on the upper arms (SEL high 19s). This also opens up the energy sites on the back (9 and 10) and clears the chest area, as well as helping the digestive system. And finally, another helpful energy site is on the neck. Place the right hand on the right side of the neck next to the spine and the left hand on the left side of the neck next to the spine (SEL 12) – I had something stuck in my throat the other day and I found that it worked a treat!

For longterm ‘work’ on this ‘project’, there are many possible flows, but I would suggest The Jin Shin Jyutsu Trinity exercises, see these older posts on my blog for The Trinity Flows: Main Central, Left and Right Supervisors and Mediator (Crossing Energies)

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu to help the Heart and Breathing

Question: My mum has been in hospital with difficulty breathing due to fluid on the lungs caused by an irregular heartbeat (well I think that’s what it was – doctors not very specific on cause), she also picked up a Urinary Tract Infection which is now under control. She’s at home now and while progressing I’d like to do as much as I can to give her the best quality of life. I’ve had the JSJ book – The Touch of Healing for some time and something moved me to get it out and have a read through it again. I’ve started doing the finger holds each day but would really appreciate your suggestions to strenghthen the heart and reduce fluid on the lungs. Also anything specific to help the breathing. Thank you so much for your very informative blog on JSJ – it’s such a beautiful gentle process. – JF

Answer: Dear JF – Holding the fingers is a GREAT start! You are helping your mother tremendously by holding them. Chapter 3 in The Touch of Healing talks about the Trinity Flows: The Main Central, Supervisors and Mediator. Supervisors are very easy and very powerful. See an older post here for The Jin Shin Jyutsu Trinity Flows.

Holding Opposite Fingers and Toes for Total Harmony

Towards the end of the book, there is a chapter called Harmonising with the Fingers and Toes. Go to Palms and Soles: Revitalising the Entire Being. Read through that whole section and especially the thumbs and opposite little toesthis sequence is for difficulty breathing and irregular heartbeat. The whole harmonising exercise is quite simple to do on another person: sit on the right side of your mother (make sure you are comfortable and relaxed), and with your left hand, hold her left thumb. With your right hand, hold her right little toe. Hold for a few minutes, until you feel a ryhthmic pulse that might start banging quite loudly for a while. Let it settle down, then move onto the next finger and toe. With your left hand, hold the left index finger, and with your right hand hold right ring toe. Hold for a few minutes. Then move onto the middle finger and opposite middle toe, then to the ring finger and opposite index toe, then to the little finger and opposite big toe.

You could do each finger and toe for 5 minutes each on one side which is 25 minutes (as a guide use the pulse as well!) and then sit on the left side and reverse the hands. This exercise is very powerful and it is such a gift to receive it, especially because it’s not that comfortable to do as self help!

So I hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions or doubts just send me an email.

Finally, if there is ANY pain during this exercise that lasts more than a few seconds, then STOP what you are doing and go to the PAIN HOLD until it clears – PAIN is a good sign that the energy is moving – but there’s no reason to have to suffer unduly!
