We need never know fatigue: The teachings of Mary Burmeister and Jin Shin Jyutsu

Mary Burmeister Meets Master Jiro Murai

Have you ever felt like there was something more. Like a quiet pull toward a deeper truth or inner balance? Many of us have moments like that. Moments where we seek not just answers, but a return to ourselves. That’s the space that Mary Burmeister says she found herself in when she encountered Master Jiro Murai, and through him, the universal art he called Jin Shin Jyutsu.

In the late 1940s, Mary Burmeister was introduced to Master Murai during a time of personal searching.

She describes the meeting in one of her Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help books. When they met, he asked her a simple question: “Would you like to study with me, to take a gift from Japan to America?” Mary didn’t know then the full weight of those words, but luckily for us, her answer was just as simple: “Yes.”

The search is over, and an art of living begins

She recalls that at her very first lecture, she was overcome with humility and awe. Something clicked into place: the feeling of why she was truly here. Her long search ended. And in its place, an Art of Living began.

It would take nearly three decades of devoted study before Mary fully grasped the depth of that initial invitation. Today, thanks to her dedication, Jin Shin Jyutsu is practiced and loved by thousands of people around the world.

The Art of Getting to KNOW (Help) MYSELF

In its early stage, Master Jiro Murai called Jin Shin Jyutsu the Art of Happiness, the Art of Longevity, the Art of Benevolence.

When introducing Jin Shin Jyutsu, Mary says:

“It is the Creator’s art, personally, for MYSELF.
It is simply the art of Getting to KNOW (Help) MYSELF.”

Jin Shin Jyutsu isn’t something outside of us. It’s something inbuilt, something we remember. A natural harmony within the spirit, mind and body that can be supported through the awareness and use of our own two hands.

Mary says: “We need never know fatigue.”

One of Mary’s most well-known reflections of Jin Shin Jyutsu is this:

“We need never know fatigue.
Energy can never tire.
It is our personal imbalance that causes fatigue.”

She explains that when the body’s 26 Safety Energy Locks are in balance, we experience a state of lightness and joy. A sense of ecstasy, as she puts it. This state of being is like the secret of the fountain of youth and available to each one of us, at all times.

“That which was, is, and shall be, simply IS.
The Master Key is our degree of desire and trust… the knowing.”

Mary believed BE-ing in harmony leads directly to happiness. And that to find that harmony, we must love whatever we do. No matter how ordinary or uninspiring it may seem.

“There should be no person or thing one dislikes,
for hatred develops imbalance, which causes fatigue.”

And what do we use to restore this balance?

“Our two hands.”

Our hands, Mary says, are our rejuvenators and harmonizers. They connect us to the universal supply of energy – not just within ourselves, but in the infinite energy of the universe around us.

“We need only be aware of this supply.”
