A real-life Jin Shin Jyutsu story
Many times when people know very little, or nothing at all, about how Jin Shin Jyutsu works and they try a simple exercise, they experience a profound change. They call it ‘miraculous’ or ‘magic’. Or they say, ‘I can’t believe it’, or ‘Maybe it’s just my imagination’.
Honestly, in the 26 years I’ve practised Jin Shin Jyutsu, I’ve experienced this myself many times. Because when symptoms ease rapidly, especially after just a few minutes of self-help, it can feel almost unbelievable.
Recently, I received one such email from one of my readers. The subject line caught my eye immediately. It read: WOW! Speechless! Naturally, I was intrigued.

The email that inspired this article
Her email, which I am sharing with her permission, read like this:
“Dear Astrid,
I’m writing to you today wanting to share what happened last night after I used a Jin Shin Jyutsu hold you put on your website for fever symptoms.
I’m honestly in disbelief this morning!!
I woke up at 3:30 am with fever dreams, overheating and borderline sweaty, heart pounding in my chest, and full body shakes and shivering which were uncontrollable. Even my teeth were chattering!
The day before I had a headache and fatigue all day, I wasn’t sure if it was a tension headache or not. I spend long hours sitting at my desk working, so my neck and shoulders often get stiff.
Anyway, I immediately thought of you at 3:30 am and looked up what to do for a fever on FlowsForLife.
I found the exercise and did the hold: right hand over the left shoulder at Safety Energy Lock 11 and left hand on the groin at Safety Energy Lock 15, until I felt my body relax, about five minutes each side.
After just 10 minutes…
My heart rate slowed down to normal, my mind relaxed, and my body temperature felt regulated. I didn’t take any medicine either!
I didn’t take my temperature so I’m not sure if it was a fever, but I was already accepting I was coming down with a fever. I felt so disheartened because I hadn’t had a fever in almost a decade.
I’ve been following you for years and practising Jin Shin Jyutsu here and there. I also use Reiki while doing the holds which has helped me into deeper relaxation.
But last night’s experience was so baffling, magical even, because of how quickly my symptoms disappeared.
Thank you for doing what you do and sharing your knowledge and wisdom of this practice so freely on your website. I definitely want to learn more!”

When I receive emails like this, I feel deeply inspired to continue the work I’m doing. And if you’re reading this right now, I’m so glad you’ve discovered Jin Shin Jyutsu…
Why, and how, does Jin Shin Jyutsu work?
But perhaps you’re wondering: why, and how, does Jin Shin Jyutsu actually work? How can something so seemingly simple have such a dramatic and quick effect?
What makes experiences like this so compelling is not only that the symptoms shifted, but how fast they shifted.
When someone unfamiliar with Jin Shin Jyutsu hears a story like this, they may assume there are only a few possible explanations: either it was “just placebo,” something mystical, or simply coincidence.
In reality, there are several very understandable layers at work here simultaneously – physiological, energetic, emotional, and attentional.
So let’s look at what might have happened here:
When she woke up at 3:30am, her body had likely entered a full sympathetic nervous system response: overheating, pounding heart, shaking, fever dreams, muscle tension, chattering teeth. Whether it was the beginning of a virus, nervous system overload, inflammation, exhaustion, or all three, her system had moved into alarm mode.
What she did with the SEL 11 and SEL 15 hold changed the state of her nervous system.
Jin Shin Jyutsu works, even if you know nothing about it
In Jin Shin Jyutsu terms, those Safety Energy Locks help harmonise descending and ascending energy, release congestion and stagnation, and restore circulation of life energy throughout the body. But even if someone doesn’t understand JSJ energetically, the body still responds to the experience of the hold.
Several things likely happened simultaneously:
- Her attention shifted away from fear and catastrophic thinking (‘I’m getting really sick’) into connection and regulation.
- Her breathing naturally slowed.
- Her muscles began to relax.
- Her vagus nerve likely became more active, helping regulate heart rate, temperature perception, and the stress response.
- Her body stopped spending so much energy in ‘fight-or-flight’ mode.
- And importantly: the body already knows how to heal.
As one of my teachers says: “You don’t need to know how electricity works to turn on the light.” You just press the switch, and Voilà!
We don’t force healing in Jin Shin Jyutsu
Practices like Jin Shin Jyutsu do not ‘force’ healing so much as remove interference and support the body’s own organising intelligence. That’s why results can sometimes seem instantaneous.
People often underestimate how quickly the body can change once the nervous system receives a clear signal of safety. Heart rate can slow within seconds. Shivering can stop. Temperature perception can normalise. Pain can diminish rapidly. Panic can dissolve. We see this in many healing modalities: breath work, meditation, acupressure, therapeutic touch, prayer, even being held by someone you love.
What makes Jin Shin Jyutsu unique is that it offers very precise pathways for supporting this process through both the energy body and the nervous system simultaneously.
Another important piece is that she wasn’t resisting the experience while doing the hold. She trusted it. She relaxed into it. She even combined it with Reiki, which likely deepened parasympathetic activation and receptivity. That combination of touch, awareness, intention, and energetic harmonisation can sometimes create surprisingly rapid changes.

An important consideration
Now, I also want to say something important here.
Not everyone experiences immediate or dramatic changes with Jin Shin Jyutsu.
Sometimes the shifts are subtle. Sometimes they happen gradually over time. And sometimes healing is taking place on levels we cannot immediately see: emotionally, energetically, spiritually, or deep within the nervous system.
Over the years, I’ve learned not to measure healing only by dramatic results or quick symptom changes. Often the deepest changes are the quietest ones.
And sometimes people carry so much fear, so many diagnoses, so many labels, or such a long history of struggle, that that they begin to lose trust in the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate. But even then, something meaningful can begin to change.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, we are not forcing the body to heal. We are listening to it, supporting it, and creating the conditions for harmony and balance to return in their own time.
And finally, sometimes symptoms are amplified not only by illness itself, but by the fear surrounding the symptoms. The moment the fear cycle breaks, the whole physiology can reorganise. I’ve seen that and experienced just that many times.
So the ‘miracle’ may not be that the body changed quickly. The real miracle may be remembering that the body is capable of changing quickly. That’s something many of us have forgotten in the pace and stress of modern life.
