Jin Shin Jyutsu Little Fingers and Big Toes

Ever hold your little fingers? You might be surprised at how good it makes you feel. So easy and effective you can do this exercise any time of the day – works while you sleep too!

In energy speak, little fingers and big toes are great harmonisers for the whole being.

Holding Little Fingers and Big Toes helps with so many issues including: ‘heart discomforts, heart palpitations, and chest congestion. It also helps clear the vascular, nervous, muscular and skeletal energy circulatory systems. Helps clear head discomforts and bloat problems including swollen ankles.’

You can do the exercises below at any time as self help. A few minutes each day is a good place to start, or until you feel relief from symptoms.Remember that the effect of holding often is cumulative, so the more you hold, the quicker the positive effects.

Holding little finger also helps dissipate a sore throat, so at the first sign of it, hold either little finger. Quick self help hold for heart palpitations and heart discomforts: hold left little finger.

So the Exercises:
Hold LEFT LITTLE FINGER with Right Hand then, after a few minutes,
Hold the BIG TOES (hold left big toe with left hand, and hold right big toe with right hand) then, after a few minutes,
Hold RIGHT LITTLE FINGER with Left Hand then, after a few minutes
Hold the BIG TOES again (hold left big toe with left hand, and hold right big toe with right hand).

Note: if you find it difficult to hold your big toes, then you can use this variation: after holding little finger, place your hands in your groins (left hand on left groin and right hand on right groin – (‘the 15s’ they wash our hearts with laughter).

How to Ease FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real

jin shin jyutsu holds index finger 2

In the Jin Shin Jyutsu self help classes we often talk about FEAR as False Evidence Appearing Real.

In the early days when I started teaching, one of my friends brought to life ‘False Evidence Appearing Real’ with a lovely anecdote on which I have based the following story:

Imagine you’re walking down a dark alley. You’re afraid of going forwards, but you’re even more afraid of turning back. So you keep going. At the end of the alley a light appears with a MONSTER of a shadow. Now you’re REALLY afraid. Somehow you keep going.  As you get closer, you realise that this ‘monster’ shadow was cast on the wall by a cute little puppy…False Evidence Appearing Real.

FEARS are at the basis of all disharmony. On a more philosophical level, Mary Burmeister explained that we FEAR when we believe in lack and limitation and THIS is the False Evidence Appearing Real. Because in TRUTH “through Jin Shin Jyutsu our awareness is awakened to the simple fact that all that is needed for harmony [on all levels] is within MYSELF.”

I’ve talked before about the five Attitudes that we experience: Worry, Fear, Anger, Grief and Pretense. Underlying all these attitudes is FEAR. When we believe in lack and limitations, then there is FEAR.

The (very) good news is that we can simply hold the INDEX finger (either one) to help harmonise the attitude of FEAR. If the fear is very deep then we can hold each thumb and finger in turn.

Why don’t you give it a go right now?

Sit comfortably in a quiet space. Wrap your right hand around your left index finger, and relax your hands. Close your eyes.

How long to hold for? Until you feel relief.

I find that if I hold my index (or any other) finger for about 20 minutes, I definitely feel things ‘happening’.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help for Anxiety

Anxiety and FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) are a big part of our lives. Managing our anxieties and fears goes a long way to managing stress in our lives and in our bodies.

A very simple way to manage anxiety is to hold the index finger. Not only does it calm anxieties and nervousness, but it helps the following:

* Teeth and gums
* Backaches
* Digestion, constipation
* Self criticism, shyness
* Muscle tension
* Kidney and bladder energy
* the stress of standing for many hours
* anything to do with the element of water (colour blue)

There is nothing to fear but Fear itself.

Letter: The Miracle of Horses and Jin Shin Jyutsu

Note:  I received this lovely letter about Jin Shin Jyutsu a while back and have published it with Helen’s permission..

Hello Astrid

I have been studying and using JSJ off and on for the past few years and I just wanted to tell you about one of my most amazing experiences.

I have or have had (?) an ongoing problem with my spine.  One of the discs in my mid to lower back used to become displaced through damage and wear.  At its worst I could not straighten, used to cry out in pain getting in and out of a car, and could not walk, sit or lie down without constant pain.  I had chiropractic treatment, Bowen, osteopathy and consulted a sports injury specialist.  I used  to go to a therapist to have poisonous fluid drained and the disc put back, every 3 months or so.  The more fluid, the more pain.  This particular therapist told me the area was very delicate and worn and would only get worse.  He said that I would need to have this treatment or something similar probably for the rest of my life to try to manage it as best we could.

Aged 51 after discovering horses for the first time in my life 12 months earlier, I went to Portugal and was chosen by my Lusitano Tui.  A then young 5 year old stallion, largely unhandled, he had only just begun his training as a riding horse.   I had no experience of handling horses and only a small amount of riding experience during the 12 months prior to buying him, and each time I would endure excruciating pain in my right hip and my back.  Yet I was driven to become involved with horses and brought him home as a gelding.

One day whilst walking my dogs in the woods behind my house, I was accidently knocked to the ground by one of them.  After struggling back to my feet, I found I couldn’t straighten, could hardly walk and the pain was really bad.  I knew from all my past experiences that the disc has been displaced.

I don’t know how I managed to get back home and I then went through 48 hours of terrible pain.  I was determined this time to sort it out for myself and began by giving myself Reiki (I am a Reiki Master).  It was comforting but that’s all and by this time I was high from pain and lack of sleep.  I tried to manipulate appropriate acupressure points but it was too painful.  Then I remembered JSJ.  I looked through my book The Touch of Healing and decided that the Main Central was the movement to try.

I worked with this move all through the night.  In the early hours of the morning I found that I was shaking all over, had the worst headache ever and a high fever; it felt like I had a good dose of the flu.  I knew it had worked though and that this was my healing crisis.  After having some blessed sleep, I woke to no pain!

That was almost 4 years ago.  I have not been back to my therapist and my horse and I enjoy riding bareback and bitless down the country roads and lanes where I live.  I do not have any problem with hips, neck, hands feet or back after riding or handling my wonderful horse and I walk on average 2 to 3 miles a day either with my dogs or horse or both!

It remains to be seen whether my disc has actually mended itself.  My therapist certainly believed that the disc was worn and damaged and was not something that would improve.  And, he was genuinely horrified when I bought my horse!  He is skilled therapist and a lovely, caring  man and he helped me alot and for this I am truly grateful.

However, I am even more grateful to my Higher Self for guiding me to horses and JSJ!

Thank you for your wonderful website!

Kind regards
Helen

Self help: Talking about Back Pain

Been sitting in front of the computer too long – haven’t been stretching – or conversely, have you been running lots, climbing lots? Suddenly the back hurts. I mean, really hurts. And it’s a very specific point, yet there’s lots of sore spots. Dig your fingers into the buttock and the back and try to find the source of the pain – very difficult. The buttock hurts, the spine hurts, the sacrum hurts.

So you go off to the doctor and the doctor recommends pain killers, x-rays, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatments, or whatever. They prod you, they jump on you, they x-ray you, they have NO idea what is causing this pain.

Okay. So have you ever heard of Piriformis Syndrome? The piriformis is a relatively small muscle in the buttock that can cause HAVOC. When I studied Anatomy and Physiology as part of my Aromatherapy course, the first thing that our professor told us about when we covered the back was this muscle: the piriformis. It’s such a beautiful name, but boy, when it is not happy it really is NOT happy.

This comes from spine-health.com:
‘The piriformis is a muscle located deep in the hip that runs in close proximity to the sciatic nerve. Piriformis syndrome is used to describe when the piriformis muscle becomes tight and/or inflamed; which may cause irritation of the sciatic nerve. This irritation leads to sciatica-like pain, tingling and numbness that run from the lower back, to the rear and sometimes down the leg and into the foot.’

So what is the cure? Stretching exercises (there are internet sites that will give you some exercises but anything to stretch out the leg and buttock will help alleviate the symptoms). Rest is actually not the best thing – exercise and movement will help.

In terms of Jin Shin Jyutsu holds. I find that holding the ‘hot spot’ pain areas with one hand and holding the outside of the ankle with the other hand helps to ‘melt’ the pain. Might take a bit of time but keep at it, and it will eventually ease. Along with the stretching exercises, you should feel the pain and discomfort easing within 24 hours….

No Right and Wrong, Just Left and Right

Last Sunday I had a lovely Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment from a friend. We were working our way back through the depths from four to one (more on the different depths of energy in another post). At one point she had her right hand on my right SEL 2 and her left hand on my left SEL 4. And boy, did I fly!

It was a lovely sensation….until she moved her hands because she realised that she was in the ‘wrong’ position!!! When she ‘corrected’ that position, my back went into a spasm of pain. It was incredible. I asked her please to stop and to go back to the ‘incorrect’ position.

The point I’m trying to make here is that we get so caught up in how things ‘should’ be, and what is seemingly ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.

My interpretation of the situation, specifically my friend having such a wonderful effect with that ‘incorrect’ position is that 1. she intuitively ‘heard’ what my body was asking her for and followed that before her ‘brain’ could get in the way and 2. that hold was probably part of another flow (although I have yet to find it, anyone have any ideas?).

It had the most profoundly soothing effect on me – on the whole spine and my hip area. In fact, I think I’ll go and give myself another session right now…

Exercise: Self Help For Back Pain with JSJ Hold

My back has been aching all week (it’s probably all that stuff I’ve been carrying lately). So I’ve incorporated some gentle stretching every day and yesterday I worked on SEL 2 (especially the right side) – that Flow has helped because the 2 area was tight and sore!

The simplest Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help for backache is to hold the index finger (and also the thumb separately) every day – go to sleep holding your index finger, and it’ll work as you sleep.

Self Help for Sciatica Pain with Jin Shin Jyutsu hold

I saw a friend yesterday who has had a sciatic pain for two days. Safety Energy Locks 2 are the key to our own personal chiropractor, so applying the TWO FLOW would be helpful to realign the spine.

The other KEY to sciatica pain is the opposite SEL 12 in the neck. If you have sciatica pain (caused by the sciatic nerve being pinched) on the left side, then hold your 12s but specifically give your right 12 lots of attention and vice versa. Just place your hand on the area of the neck shown for a few minutes at a time.

For those who have Text 1 (by Mary Burmeister), the 11, 12 FLOW will also help.

Sciatica at a glance:
    • Sciatica is a nerve pain from irritation of the sciatic nerve

  • The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body.

  • Sciatica pain is typically felt from the low back to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee

  • Treatments for sciatica depend on the underlying cause and the severity.
