How to Ease FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real

In the Jin Shin Jyutsu self help classes we often talk about FEAR as False Evidence Appearing Real.

In the early days when I started teaching, one of my friends brought to life ‘False Evidence Appearing Real’ with a lovely anecdote on which I have based the following story:

Imagine you’re walking down a dark alley. You’re afraid of going forwards, but you’re even more afraid of turning back. So you keep going. At the end of the alley a light appears with a MONSTER of a shadow. Now you’re REALLY afraid. Somehow you keep going.  As you get closer, you realise that this ‘monster’ shadow was cast on the wall by a cute little puppy…False Evidence Appearing Real.

FEARS are at the basis of all disharmony. On a more philosophical level, Mary Burmeister explained that we FEAR when we believe in lack and limitation and THIS is the False Evidence Appearing Real. Because in TRUTH “through Jin Shin Jyutsu our awareness is awakened to the simple fact that all that is needed for harmony [on all levels] is within MYSELF.”

I’ve talked before about the five Attitudes that we experience: Worry, Fear, Anger, Grief and Pretense. Underlying all these attitudes is FEAR. When we believe in lack and limitations, then there is FEAR.

The (very) good news is that we can simply hold the INDEX finger (either one) to help harmonise the attitude of FEAR. If the fear is very deep then we can hold each thumb and finger in turn.

Why don’t you give it a go right now?

Sit comfortably in a quiet space. Wrap your right hand around your left index finger, and relax your hands. Close your eyes.

How long to hold for? Until you feel relief.

I find that if I hold my index (or any other) finger for about 20 minutes, I definitely feel things ‘happening’.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help Hold for Fatigue

Sometimes there is just no way to get to sleep no matter what I hold or what self help I do. So when I have to get up after a night like that, I feel exhausted and I have that ‘hung over’ feeling. Not very pleasant at all.

jin shin jyutsu fatigueThe good news is that there is an easy way to take fatigue out of the body, and get rid of that ‘hung over’ feeling.

All you need to do is sit on your hands for a few minutes (I tend to give it about 20 minutes).

The last time I felt that way, I sat on my hands and was ‘right as rain’ for the rest of the day. And I slept very well that night. This hold is also really helpful after exercising (to avoid sore muscles) and when you do have sore muscles.

So tried and tested, and I hope it works for you too.


Self Help to Beat Fatigue and the Heat

Fatigue colours our world and affects how we feel, and Jin Shin Jyutsu is one of the most powerful ways to overcome fatigue.

Time after time, I have tried and tested these holds and it is absolutely amazing how my whole world can change in 20 minutes – purely because I have been able to energise myself. And if I can, you can too with this simple exercise.

The Spleen energy governs our energy levels and this exercise is very powerful for vitality and calm (one needs energy to stay calm, believe it or not!) – 20 minutes minimum every day.

The Spleen is the biggest lymphatic organ in the body and if kept happy, helps all the other organs.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu, a sequence of HOLDS is referred to as a FLOW. The following self-help flow can be used to revitalise and re-energise the whole system, and to be ‘happy and content where ever you are’. Use it to regulate the body’s temperature (to warm the body when it’s cold, to cool the body when it’s hot), and to balance the nervous system (to calm).

Hold each step for a few minutes or until you feel you want to move to the next position. Tip: put on a chill out CD and when the track changes, move the hands to the next position… The music can add a wonderful dimension to the session…

Place Left hand on base of spine (coccyx)
Place Right hand on right inside of heel
Step 2
Move Right hand and place on left base of rib cage and hold
Step 3
Move Left hand and place on right above breast area
Step 4
Move Left hand and place on left center of collar bone

So to summarise: the Spleen flow helps beat fatigue, insomnia, headaches, anxiety and much more. It stimulates the immune system, helps the digestive system, helps regulate our body temperature (you can use it to warm and to cool the body – isn’t that great?) – this flow also helps the skin, helps beat the attitude of WORRY and well, it’s just a great general all round wonder flow – use it with HUMILITY AND GRATITUDE!

Jin Shin Jyutsu to RELEASE TENSION

Dis-harmony. Dis-comfort. Pain. Dis-ease. A way to look at all of these labels is to recognise that they are the (in many cases longterm) effect of TENSION. Tension manifests itself in many different ways. I had a client years ago who had been told she had breast cancer. She was terrified. She had had surgery, and was still terrified of what was going to happen to her and what ‘they’ were going to do to her. The first treatment I gave her was incredible. I hardly touched her and her whole body shook uncontrollably. There was SO much tension to be released. I felt so sorry for her. After a few minutes of this shaking I got the feeling to go to her feet. I started massaging them. Her shaking immediately stopped and so I kept going. She relaxed (finally!). Next treatment there was less shaking.

Going to the feet (SEL 5, 6, 7, 16, and 24 are found in the feet) helps to move the energy DOWN. I would have also had a positive effect if I had just held SEL 7s (on the big toes), but because the tension was so acute I needed to have my hands everywhere on her feet and toes. Also, I remembered that once, when I woke up from a bad dream (very unusual for me), I was shaking – an internal shaking like shock. I immediately went to the SEL 24s to harmonise the CHAOS, and immediately it worked! So mothers, remember the 24s for your children when they have bad dreams. It’s also why going to the feet helped my client with acute muscle tension. The energy site number 24 is found down from the ankle on the top of the foot down from the little toe –

Tension can be physical, emotional, mental. And one level can carry and many times does carry into another level. Jin Shin Jyutsu is about releasing tensions – when you release tension you breathe more easily and you HARMONISE. As simple as that.
