Q&A: Ascending and Descending Energies

Question: I am responding to your offer of help for particular issues. Perhaps you can help me. I have some rather challenging issues with my energy patterns. Every time I do any energy work, my energy shoots up to my upper regions, especially to my crown…..I have tried some grounding exercises, but they have not been very helpful. It seems to me that I am having issues with descending the energy again. I think the energy rises up my front and back. Everything goes up, nothing comes down. My head feels like a balloon! I wonder if there are any exercises that specifically address that concern. I would be very grateful, thank you! -M

Answer: Dear M, Ascending energy comes up the back and descending energy goes down the front.  To help balance the two, do the wonderful Main Central exercise, and you can also hold the insides of your knees to bring the energy down (experiment with crossing or not crossing your arms).

Two other exercises:

If there is an effect in the front of the body (like bloating, stomach cramp, etc) then the cause or the tension is in the back so we work on the back to clear the front. A simple exercise to clear the front is to do the following: for the left side, place your right hand over your left shoulder and sit on your left hand (so place your left hand on your left sitting bone, palm up). Do this for at least 20 minutes, and reverse the hands for the right side. This exercise is also good to clear the head, and headaches.

If there is an effect in the back of the body (so back pain, hip pain, etc) then the cause or tension is in the front of the body, so we work on the front to clear the back. A simple exercise to clear the back is to do the following: for the left side, place your right hand over your left shoulder and place your left hand/fingers in your left groin. Do this for at least 20 minutes, then reverse the hands for the right side. This exercise is also great to boost your immune system and helps alleviate heavy legs.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help Holds Manage Cholesterol Levels

Letters like this one are a real joy to me, mainly because the person is actively using the information and seeing/feeling the benefits of the Jin Shin Jyutsu self help holds over a period of time – not only that, her doctor is amazed too! I’m printing this letter with her permission:

Good morning Astrid,

Thank you so very much for your website with all the practical, wonderful Jin Shin Jyutsu information you have on there. I refer to your site almost daily, and not only use it but have learned so much from it.

I’m sure many others also appreciate the time you take to share these wonderful holds and your expertise with us and to answer our questions.

About ten years ago I came across the ‘Touch of Healing’ book in our local library and immediately purchased one for my own use. I was fascinated by it and although I didn’t know anyone who practiced Jin Shin or was a practitioner, I read the book and used the finger holds.

Then several months ago I found your website and began in earnest to learn about and use many of the other holds.

In fact I loved it when you mentioned that if you wanted to change your life, then hold the 1’s for an hour a day. I took you at your word and started doing just that. It so worked!

A couple of months ago I’d gone to my doctor for a regular check up with the lab work. When he came in he said to me your lab work is great. He said there isn’t anything that is out of balance and your cholesterol is way down and everything is where it is suppose to be.

I have never been able to get my cholesterol down, even though I’ve been taking medication for several years.

I said really? I was so surprised!
He said yes really, I don’t know what you are doing, but KEEP DOING IT!

So of course I am continuing the Jin Shin, and a few weeks ago I had a knee project happen and about the same time an esophagus project developed.

With the knee project it is very hard for me to hold both 1’s at the same time now, so I hold one side for thirty minutes and then the other side for thirty minutes. I also hold the 15’s for the knees and I do the Main Central every night when I go to bed.

For the esophagus I am using the left and right Supervisor flows as well as the high 19’s.

While I am waiting to see the knee specialist and hear back the results from my esophagus test, I am averaging about 2-3 hours each day doing these holds. (I am retired and have the time to devote to the holds.)

Although neither project is completely gone yet, every day I am able to detect a difference and especially this morning I can tell the knee is getting better.

At first it seemed to take a long time to see results, but I am glad you mentioned that all holds are ‘cumulative’, as that has kept me going and helped me to wait and watch for the results.

I feel Jin Shin Jyutsu is bringing me closer to total wellness. I need to clear and heal a lot of years but I feel so much better now than this time a year ago. I know it will be an ongoing process but I find Jin Shin to be easy to do (with a few exceptions) and it has brought me to a better place spiritually and emotionally as well as physically.

Again thank you so much for your website and information, they have been such a tremendous help to me! Please keep up the good work and know that you are appreciated!

More on Stress Relief: How to Main Central

In the previous post I talked about using the Main Central Source of Life exercise for stress relief. Because it helps everything on every level, it grounds us, calms us, balances us and most importantly: releases tensions on every level.

Many people who are new to all this energy work ask me: ‘So how do I best do these exercises?’ So here goes:

When I do the Main Central exercise, I like to lie down and prop my arms up with pillows (especially the right arm because the right hand is going to remain on top of the head for a while). I also like to put on a chill out CD so that I don’t have to look at the clock every time I need to move on to the next position. Every time the track changes, I move to the next position.

You might fall asleep in one position. Don’t worry about it. Enjoy it. Sometimes I get ‘stuck’ in position 1 or 2 or 3 for a whole hour because it FEELS SO GOOD! So be it. That’s what you need at the time.

Sometimes, there will be involuntary jerking movements as the energy gets moving. Don’t worry about it. That’s normal. Sometimes there can be a shooting pain when you hold a position. That’s also normal – as long as it dissipates pretty quickly. If it doesn’t,  stop what you’re doing and concentrate on some deep breathing for a few minutes.

Many times, the stomach will make rumbling sounds when the energy gets moving. For me, those sounds are music to my ears. There’s a great release of tension when that happens.

So please have fun with this powerful exercise. 40 minutes to an hour every day would be ideal, especially if there are any special stress projects.

The main thing is to experiment and ENJOY this wonderful exercise for STRESS RELIEF.

Self help holds for Fast Stress Relief

Stress. We all have to deal with stresses every day, which impair the stability and balance of bodily functions. A little stress is good (gives us a little kick to get us going) but a lot of stress, or even worse, long term stress can cause tension on all levels: the physical, mental and emotional.

These self help holds that I talk about in Flows for Life help relieve the tensions of stress. It’s about managing stresses that cause long term discomforts and pains. Anxiety, worry, fatigue, and a compromised immune system are just some of the effects of our modern day stresses that can lead to big label illnesses and conditions over a period of time.

The list of stress symptoms is vast and there is a hold, or Jin Shin Jyutsu exercise to help alleviate each one of them. At this point, a good all around de- stressing exercise is the Main Central Source of Life

Pay special attention to the position where the right hand is on the top of the head and the left fingers are placed between the breasts on the sternum. This position deepens the breathing – and encourages the exhale breath to clean ‘dirt, dust, grease and grime’ as Master Mary Burmeister used to say.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu Hold for Adrenals?

Question: Which jin shin points should I hold please.I think I have stressed my adrenals as I have a tendency to low adrenal function.

Answer: The adrenals are helped by holding the energy site number 23 on the (small of the) back. There is a number 23 energy site on either side and they are at elbow level when you bend the elbows. Hold them as you are lying down  or sitting comfortably, for at least 20 minutes and I’m sure you’ll notice the difference. Also hold the energy site 26 – the outer edge of the shoulderblade under the armpit – with the opposite fingers: so with right hand hold the left 26 and with the left fingers place your left thumb over your left little finger and then over your ring finger. That’ll also help calm every thing down, as well as revitalising your system! And remember the Main Central Exercise…!!

Q&A: Any Jin Shin Jyutsu Holds for the Legs

Question: I am having trouble with my right leg. It goes numb and tingles.  It starts from my toes now its all the way up to my leg. This only happens when I sit down on my bed. Awaiting your response.  This is a great concern of mine.  I would be very grateful if you can help me.

Answer: Numbness in the feet – yes, i sometimes have that too when I’ve been sitting too long at the computer!

Reflexology would be a wonderful way to release the tension, not only in the feet but also in the rest of the body, or you might want to have a session with an Osteopath or a Mctimoney Chiropractor to release the tension, which I think might be coming from the sacrum or the lower back…

However, in terms of JSJ holds, there are a couple of things you can do.
To help the feet, with left hand, hold right little toe, while you place your right fingers on the outside of the right heel just below the ankle bone. This is the the energy site number 16. Reverse the hands for the other side.

See the link for all the 26 Safety Energy Locks

Another helpful Jin Shin Jyutsu hold for the feet is: hold right 16  with left fingers, and place right hand/fingers on the outside of the right calf muscle on the bone about 2 inches down from the knee – hold until you feel a pulse then hold until the pulse settles down, then hold again for a while (at least 20 minutes)

Also do Main Central Exercise every day if you can; especially the last position where you hold the pubic bone and the coccyx

Letter: The Miracle of Horses and Jin Shin Jyutsu

Original Artwork by Astrid (c)

Note:  I received this lovely letter about Jin Shin Jyutsu a while back and have published it with Helen’s permission..

Hello Astrid

I have been studying and using JSJ off and on for the past few years and I just wanted to tell you about one of my most amazing experiences.

I have or have had (?) an ongoing problem with my spine.  One of the discs in my mid to lower back used to become displaced through damage and wear.  At its worst I could not straighten, used to cry out in pain getting in and out of a car, and could not walk, sit or lie down without constant pain.  I had chiropractic treatment, Bowen, osteopathy and consulted a sports injury specialist.  I used  to go to a therapist to have poisonous fluid drained and the disc put back, every 3 months or so.  The more fluid, the more pain.  This particular therapist told me the area was very delicate and worn and would only get worse.  He said that I would need to have this treatment or something similar probably for the rest of my life to try to manage it as best we could.

Aged 51 after discovering horses for the first time in my life 12 months earlier, I went to Portugal and was chosen by my Lusitano Tui.  A then young 5 year old stallion, largely unhandled, he had only just begun his training as a riding horse.   I had no experience of handling horses and only a small amount of riding experience during the 12 months prior to buying him, and each time I would endure excruciating pain in my right hip and my back.  Yet I was driven to become involved with horses and brought him home as a gelding.

One day whilst walking my dogs in the woods behind my house, I was accidently knocked to the ground by one of them.  After struggling back to my feet, I found I couldn’t straighten, could hardly walk and the pain was really bad.  I knew from all my past experiences that the disc has been displaced.

I don’t know how I managed to get back home and I then went through 48 hours of terrible pain.  I was determined this time to sort it out for myself and began by giving myself Reiki (I am a Reiki Master).  It was comforting but that’s all and by this time I was high from pain and lack of sleep.  I tried to manipulate appropriate acupressure points but it was too painful.  Then I remembered JSJ.  I looked through my book The Touch of Healing and decided that the Main Central was the movement to try.

I worked with this move all through the night.  In the early hours of the morning I found that I was shaking all over, had the worst headache ever and a high fever; it felt like I had a good dose of the flu.  I knew it had worked though and that this was my healing crisis.  After having some blessed sleep, I woke to no pain!

That was almost 4 years ago.  I have not been back to my therapist and my horse and I enjoy riding bareback and bitless down the country roads and lanes where I live.  I do not have any problem with hips, neck, hands feet or back after riding or handling my wonderful horse and I walk on average 2 to 3 miles a day either with my dogs or horse or both!

It remains to be seen whether my disc has actually mended itself.  My therapist certainly believed that the disc was worn and damaged and was not something that would improve.  And, he was genuinely horrified when I bought my horse!  He is skilled therapist and a lovely, caring  man and he helped me alot and for this I am truly grateful.

However, I am even more grateful to my Higher Self for guiding me to horses and JSJ!

Thank you for your wonderful website!

Kind regards
Helen

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu holds for Jerking

Question: My daughter who has received Osteopathic treatments recently that discovered an old concussion.  Her body has been going through major readjustments, and is still fatigued.  Her legs, hips, and stomach are jerking a lot (day and night), especially when she is relaxed in bed.  What JSJ holds / flows would you recommend (both self help and flows I could use for her)?

Answer: It sounds like the energy is a bit stuck in the hip area – so here are two holds to start with:  She lies face up in bed, you sit at her right side. Place your left hand palm down flat on her tummy on the navel and your right hand on her back palm up at the same height as the other hand you have on her navel so you ‘sandwich’ her between your hands. Hold for at least 20 minutes

Then move that position down to the pubic bone and the coccyx (the last hold of the self help Main Central Exercise). Hold another 20 minutes at least. STOP if she has any pain or discomfort – or go down to the big toes and hold them

Then, for another session, do the Trinity Exercises.

And finally, for another session, you can hold the backs of her knees for 20 minutes. This hold is key to helping the muscles and realigning the hip area: to realign the hip hold the more lateral ouside area of the knee (it is energy site number 8 – have a look at the 26 Safety Energy Locks Chart

Q&A: Any Jin Shin Jyutsu Holds for Mono?

Jin Shin Jyutsu Immune Hold
Immune Hold

Question: Hi Astrid! I have used  your site many times. Thank you. I have Alice’s book but borrowed it out. I would like to know if there is  a hold for mono. My daughter has very infected tonsills and can barely swallow.  Saw the doc yesterday and we had her blood taken and it is mono, wondering if there is any hold. I have done ankles for pain and right hand over left for the throat infection. Thanks

Answer:
Mono, or mononucleosis is a viral infection.  Also called the ‘kissing disease’ it can be spread by saliva. The incubation period for infectious mononucleosis is 4 to 8 weeks. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands. It can cause liver inflammation (hepatitis) and spleen enlargement. (from medicinenet)

Since the immune system is compromised, it is important to do the immune hold:  Place the left hand over the right shoulder and right hand on right groin. Do for 20 minutes minimum. Reverse the hands for the other side (see  the diagram in this post).

Also, the Trinity Flows: Main Central, Supervisors left and right and Mediator (Main Central being the most important one) and also very important,  since the spleen is the largest lymphatic organ in the body, the Spleen Flow . She should have a Spleen Flow Session every day, and twice a day would be even better until her tonsils are back to normal.  If she is old enough, teach her the flow so that she can do it too!

For me, there was life before Spleen Flow and life after. I also suffered a lot from tonsillitis when I was younger and  I still have them!

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu for (Deep) Skin Conditions

Question: Hello. Thank you for your blog on self help holds with Jin Shin Jyutsu. I broke out in eczema on my body 8 years ago, starting from the back of my neck and during the first year it spread to various parts of my body then gradually disappeared after 3 years. The only spot that still exists is covering all over the back of my neck, which is no longer red but still itches quite often and is a bit swollen, though I no longer feel pain when I tilt my head back. I was told that I now have scleroderma. Would you have any suggestions what points I can hold to help heal this condition? Thank you, I would really appreciate your advice. – D

Answer: Hi D – The special body function for the skin is to palm the calves. At least 20 minutes a day and if you can, twice a day for at least two weeks. See this older post Self Help for the Deep Skin. There is also another special function energy hold for the Skin Surface. Place the fingers of the right hand under the left foot at center of the sole, and with the left hand hold the left little toe. Reverse the hands for the other side. This hold is particularly great for any itchiness of the skin. It also purifies the skin. It would also help to do the Main Central Exercise (see the older post) to harmonise your whole being and help sort out the underlying causes i.e. the immune system (you could also work on the immune system, not to stimulate it, but to harmonise it with this Immune System Hold. And finally hold your Thumb for skin surface, and your Ring finger (either side) for deep skin. Hope all this helps! – Astrid

Note: Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses which occur when the body’s tissues are attacked by its own immune system. Scleroderma is characterized by the formation of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the skin and organs of the body. The cause of scleroderma is not known (medicinenet.com)

Q&A: ‘Missing Step’ Main Central

Question: Hello, The Alice Burmeister book shows fewer points for the main central. [Touch of Healing]i am interested to find out why.Thank you, js

Answer: Hello, JS. Thanks for your question and well spotted! My honest answer is that I don’t know exactly why one step that appears on the Main Central Exercise on my blog does NOT appear in the book The Touch of Healing. The step is number L6 which places the left fingers above the belly button. Now, I can tell you from experience, that the previous step – placing left fingers at the bottom of the sternum (xiphoid process) has a deeply harmonising effect for the whole of the abdominal area, so in most cases the following step would be ‘superfluous’. However, I have also had the experience that working with the right hand at the top of the head and the left fingers above the belly button has helped me tremendously to harmonise any stomach, digestive discomfort or cramping. The thing is – there is no ultimate right or wrong, and as Mary used to say: ‘Be your own testimony’. Have FUN! Astrid
PS Afterthought on this. It is possible that the diagram also attempts to follow the chakras – the ‘missing step’ places the fingers above the navel which is the area of the base (orange) chakra. But as I said before: it’s not about right or wrong, it’s about how efficient a hold works for each individual.

The Importance of the Jin Shin Jyutsu Trinity

The ‘Trinity’ in Jin Shin Jyutsu is made up of the Main Central Function – Source of Life, the Supervisors (left and right energy), and the Mediator (which harmonises the crossing energies from left to right and vice versa). The Trinity is a truly powerful combination of exercises as it addresses everything and helps everything on every level. Do all three exercises, or just one at a time.

The Exercises of the Trinity
Link to Main Central Vertical Universal Harmonizing Energy – Source of Life

Self help for Harmonising Left and Right Supervisors: (right flow) Place left hand on right shoulder (SEL11&3) and right hand on right groin (SEL 15) then after a few minutes, move the right hand and hold the right buttock (SEL 25). Reverse the hands for the LEFT flow.

Self help for Harmonising Mediator: (to harmonise the left side energy) Place the left thumb over the left ring fingernail to make a circle and place the right hand over the left shoulder (over SEL 11&3). At the same time, bring the knees together. Mary said in Self Help book 1:  The Mediator energy is the cause for disharmony in the body. It is vitally important to keep this energy functioning properly for the total supply of energy to the whole man.

If you’ve been on the 5-day Jin Shin Jyutsu seminar and have Text 1 and Text 2, then you’ll find the Main Central on page 37, the Supervisors on pages 50 and 51, and the Mediator on page 53 – all in text 1.

The Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help books by Mary Burmeister can be ordered from Jin Shin Jyutsu Inc in Scottsdale, Arizona. They can also tell you where to order books in other languages, and give you information on the various courses available in your area.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu Holds for Psoriasis

Question: I have had psoriasis for 30 years now. It started as a teen (16), and has continued to worsen over the years. I have tried conventional topical medications. Most do not work totally, just keep the symptoms at bay. I have done much ‘research’ over the years for alternative treatments for psoriasis. Recently I have had my first Jin Shin Jyutsu session. What are some holds that I can do at home in between JSJ sessions? I am currently using a strong topical steroid spray, that has the potential to affect my adrenal glands if I use too much. This is a topic for concern also. Thank you for posting this information.

Answer: A simple and powerful way to help yourself in this instance is to hold your thumb. Whenever and where ever you find that your hands are free – watching TV, waiting for a bus, you’ll never be bored again, as these are perfect opportunities to give yourself a treatment! Then there is the powerful self-help exercise of the Main Central – especially steps L4 and L5 which help to deepen your breathing, boost your immune system and help the adrenals (L5). A good practice is to take an hour out each day for the Main Central Source of Life exercise – especially if you have a specific Jin Shin Jyutsu ‘project’ to work on, but just a few minutes in the morning and a few minutes at night working on these two ‘points’ will help ‘clean house’ in between Jin Shin Jyutsu treatments! One more hold which is particularly linked to breathing and the skin is the Lung Function Energy – the first position of this hold is: left fingers on left SEL 14 (or the last left rib before the abdominal cavity) and the right fingers on left SEL 22 (or the left clavicle). And finally, ask your Jin Shin Jytusu practitioner to show you the first 2-3 steps of the Stomach Flow, which I think will also help, as well as the Spleen Flow (which I advise you do once a day as well – doesn’t have to take long). So lots you can do for yourself! I hope this is helpful. – Astrid

This is a summary of links back to older posts that I refer to in the answer to your question:
How to Hold Your Thumb
Main Central Source of Life
Complete Spleen Flow
Deep Skin Flow

And finally, Psoriasis is a non-contagious common condition of the skin that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in red, dry patches of thickened skin. The dry flakes and skin scales are thought to result from the buildup of the rapid production of skin cells. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, scalp, and ears.

The immune system is thought to play a major role. Despite research over the past 30 years looking at many triggers, the ‘master switch’ that turns on psoriasis is still a mystery. - From Medicinenet

Q&A: Jin Shin Jytsu for Body Over Heating

Question: When younger I had no problems with heat but these days I feel easily ‘over heated’ even when it is not so hot and wearing normal clothing for the season. Is it possible to remedy this with JSJ?

Answer: Yes it is. The two things that come to me are the Spleen flow (Mary explains the flow in Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help book 1 – starts on page 39) and a special energy function flow for the deep skin in Text 2 (JSJ seminar) on page 45. See this link for an older post of the Spleen Flow, and see an older post on this JSJ blog for the special hold (deep skin). Let me know if this works. If you feel relief, but it doesn’t clear up, then there will be further flows and holds to recommend. A good idea is also to practise the Main Central every day. Have fun!

The Power of The Main Central

Ever feel like your energy’s all over the place? Too much in the head or too much in the legs and feet? Your body just doesn’t feel right. I had a day like that yesterday. I didn’t feel myself at all. It was very uncomfortable. So I asked my body to tell me what it needed, and the Main Central Vertical Hamonising Energy Function came up loud and clear! I went through the whole exercise which took me about an hour, and boy! did I feel like a new person after it.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu you can use Main Central for EVERYTHING, as self help and as a practitioner. It is POWERFUL. It is WONDERFUL.

You’ll find the exercise in a previous post – click on Main Central for more.
