This Art is Ours to Use

No matter where I am, or where I travel to, I always see people in a perfect Jin Shin Jyutsu self help hold. They are helping themselves, but they don’t even know it!

Recently, I sat next to a gentleman on a (short) flight. He was at least 6 foot tall, the flight was full and he had to cram himself into a seat next to the window. However, he had a very calm energy about him, and he did not fidget. Then I saw that he was holding his thumb! So I also held my thumb, to help us both!

Isn’t it comforting to know that helping MYSELF is as simple as holding a thumb or a finger? When I first started working with this Art, I was disbelieving. I said to myself: ‘It can’t be that simple. I will start with something much more complicated so I get REALLY good results.’

The interesting thing is that some of my most powerful results have come from spending a few minutes just holding a finger!

I encourage you to choose one of your thumbs or fingers (or let IT choose you!!) – to close your eyes and hold it for a few minutes in a quiet space. The last time I suggested this to a friend, she was amazed to discover that a whole HOUR had gone by – after which she felt like new….

But don’t take my word for it. As Mary always used to say: ‘Be your own testimony.’

JSJ Relationship Fingers, Energy Sites and Attitudes

Even if we’ve never heard of the ancient art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, we most often naturally place our hands unconsciously on our body when we need help in a certain area. Isn’t it therefore great to consciously KNOW where to put our hands to HELP MYSELF?

This is a quick summary of the relationship between the fingers, the corresponding key energy site and attitude:

Finger                   Energy Site (there is a left and right side)              (SEL)      Attitude (Emotion)
Thumb                  Forehead above the eyebrows                                   20          WORRY

Index                    Just below the collarbone                                            22           FEAR

Middle                  Third rib down on the chest                                        13           ANGER

Ring                       Last rib before the abdomen                                       14           GRIEF

Little                      Groin either side of pubic bone                                 15           TRYING TO

For a full Jin Shin Jyutsu Self help session you could spend a whole hour holding these five energy sites placing the left hand on the left side, and the right hand on the right side (it means spending about 10 minutes on each energy site).  A great way to start or end the day!

Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help: Harmonising Attitudes

There are five Attitudes: Worry, Fear, Anger, Grief and Pretense.  Each finger corresponds to an attitude, so you can harmonise Worry by holding the Thumb, Fear by holding the Index Finger, Anger by holding the Middle Finger, Grief by Holding the Ring Finger and Pretense by holding the Little Finger.

You don’t hold your thumb or finger so that the attitude ‘goes away’ – rather, you hold it so that you allow that feeling to harmonise and so that you can observe that attitude and gain more clarity. Attitudes in themselves are not bad – we are, after all human beings and part of our make up is to experience all these emotions, or attitudes.

The ‘problem’ arises when we get STUCK in the behaviours that go along with these attitudes.

The prime attitude is FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) – out of FEAR come all the others. Anger, for instance is about wanting something to happen in a certain way, our way. And if that doesn’t happen then I get ‘angry’. Sadness or grief has to do with losing something that I cherished – but if that grief goes on for 20 years then I have got stuck in that grief.  Attitudes are not right or wrong – but they can be changed so they don’t control our every day behaviour.

So hold your thumb and fingers whenever your hands are idle. You’ll be harmonising attitudes, moving the energy and revitalising your whole being. What could be easier?

And the effect is cumulative, so the more you hold, the more you ‘clean’ and the more you harmonise.

Q&A: How Long Do I Hold My Fingers For?

Question: Hello i am a user of Jinshin holds i would like to know how long one should hold the fingers and how many times in day. thanks for your reply to my query

Answer: The more you hold your fingers the more of a cumulative ‘cleaning’ and regenerative effect there is. Hold your thumb or fingers whenever your hands are free – while watching a movie, while waiting for a bus etc. For instance, you will definitely notice the effects of holding a finger or one of your thumbs for an hour if you close your eyes and sit or lie quietly…. I like to do this with the thumb – it becomes quite a powerful meditation.

Or you could hold each finger for five minutes each – that’s 50 minutes – what you could do is put on a chill out cd and change the finger when the track changes, then you don’t have to watch the clock. If you feel particularly relaxed or fall asleep, don’t worry! It just means that your body is going through a deep harmonisation – there are no ‘shoulds’ – Just go with the flow!

Jin Shin Jyutsu: Self Help for ANXIETY, DEPRESSION and More…

Worry, Anxiety, Panic, Depression, Anger, Grief and other emotions are draining and exhausting. You can help ease these uncomfortable feelings YOURSELF by holding your thumb, or another finger. The effect is cumulative, so the more you hold a finger the more you will notice the effects.

Jin Shin Jyutsu and The Present

If you REGRET the PAST (mind) and if you WORRY about the FUTURE (mind) then you miss the great GIFT of the NOW (BEING) which is why it is called THE PRESENT.

When you feel you are not in the present moment, when you feel overwhelmed, not grounded, up in the clouds or just not enjoying life (‘I HATE THIS!’) – HOLD YOUR THUMB. All you need to do is grab one of your thumbs with the opposite hand – hold and relax.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Dysthymia

Question: Hi Astrid – I would like to make a question and don´t know how to do without coming to the ‘comment’ area. I had a diagnostic that told I have dysthymia. I would like to know what flows are more effective for that. Thank you, LM

Answer: Dear LM, thanks for your email and I hope this answer helps you. Keep working on it and let me know how you get on. Take care, Astrid

What is Dysthymia?
For those who don’t know, and I was one of them because I confess I had never heard of this ‘label’, Dysthymic Disorder is a chronic condition characterized by depressive symptoms that occur for most of the day, more days than not, for at least 2 years.
While depressed, a person experiences at least two of the following symptoms:
Either overeating or lack of appetite.
Sleeping too much or having difficulty sleeping.
Fatigue, lack of energy.
Poor self-esteem.
Difficulty with concentration or decision making.
Feeling hopeless

How can Jin Shin Jyutsu help?
Looking at the variety of symptoms, it is important that you help re-harmonise the WHOLE system. The most powerful way, and the easiest as well, is to work with the Self help Main Central Function – the Source of Life. Not once a day, but TWICE a day whenever possible. Also, you need to harmonise the Supervisors and especially the Mediator. In fact, I feel that Mediator is hugely important for you, so do this exercise as often as possible. It’ll keep your energies up. And don’t forget to hold your fingers as well whenever possible!

Self Help That Works – Back to Basics: Hold Your Fingers!

The basis of Self help in Jin Shin Jyutsu is the thumb and the fingers. Holding the thumb and the fingers every day is a good way to gently clean, harmonise and revitalise all our 144,000 energy functions. The effects over time are cumulative, so the more you hold your fingers, the quicker the effect. See these older posts for how to hold the thumb and each finger and harmonise each corresponding emotion (or ATTITUDE as we call them in Jin Shin Jyutsu):

Hold the thumb for Worry
Hold the index finger for Anxiety
Hold the middle finger for Anger
Hold the ring finger for Grief
Hold the little finger for Trying (too hard)

Jin Shin Jyutsu to ‘Beat the Credit Crunch’

I know things are challenging at the moment, to say the least. Many of us are experiencing fear and anxiety about the future. We all have a road map of what is safe, and that road map is changing every day. I am also facing these challenges, as are people around me. What I do also know is that Jin Shin Jyutsu helps keep my energy up, and it keeps me focused in the PRESENT – and remember that Jane Roberts channeled the wise Seth in the seventies who said: ‘Your Point of Power is in the Present’. The main thing is: Keep BREATHING – one breath at a time – it comes and it goes – no effort – be present, and remember: focus on this moment – in this precise moment you are alive and breathing – hold a finger and GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD – ALL IS WELL.

TO GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD – work with the 20, 21, 22 Flow of Text 1 on page 32 (work on the right side first). The self-help holds in layman’s terms are: left hand on left neck (SEL 12) and right hand on right forehead (SEl 20), then move right hand to right cheek (SEL 21) then move the right hand to the right clavicle (SEL 22). The Stomach Flow, and Spleen Flows are also helpful (Mary also includes these two flows in her self-help book 1).

Exercise: Self Help for Insomnia – It WORKS!

Insomnia. Not being able to sleep. There might be several reasons for this. Sometimes if I go to bed hungry, I can’t sleep. Most often, I can’t sleep when my mind is full of THOUGHTS. The simplest way to combat insomnia is to hold your thumb.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Insecurity

Question: Hi. I love your blog – it is easy to use and there is so much information. I noticed that you were answering questions, so here is mine – I have a friend I would like to help. She always feels very insecure and unsure of herself. Is there anything simple she could do to help herself? (I have been on a 5-day course, so I have the text books). Many thanks.

Answer: Thanks for sending your question. The first thing that comes to me is that first depth needs help. A simple way to harmonise first depth is to hold the THUMB. And then all the other fingers (see previous posts on holding the fingers from October 2007). There is also a lovely flow on page 31 of Text 1 – the 16,17,18,19 Flow that is generally good for releasing the head when it has too much information (feeling self-conscious), and on page 62 of text 1 you will find the first depth harmoniser – Reversing and Increasing of First Depth which is very useful when there are feelings of insecurity and vulnerability. Hope this helps, and let me knwo how you get on! AK
