Self Help Hold to Beat Fatigue and More

This self help hold is ‘supremely powerful’. Use with ‘humility and awe’.

Helps with depletion of energy (so when there is utter exhaustion) AND overload of energy (so calms when you wake up at night and can’t go back to sleep). This self help hold helps the crossing energies, helps clear the chest and the waist, helps protect the  heart. Also useful for coughs and to help clear the voice.

Mary Burmeister was said to never really prefer any one hold above another, but that she called this one ‘a little gem’.

Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help Hold for Fatigue

Sometimes there is just no way to get to sleep no matter what I hold or what self help I do. So when I have to get up after a night like that, I feel exhausted and I have that ‘hung over’ feeling. Not very pleasant at all.

jin shin jyutsu fatigueThe good news is that there is an easy way to take fatigue out of the body, and get rid of that ‘hung over’ feeling.

All you need to do is sit on your hands for a few minutes (I tend to give it about 20 minutes).

The last time I felt that way, I sat on my hands and was ‘right as rain’ for the rest of the day. And I slept very well that night. This hold is also really helpful after exercising (to avoid sore muscles) and when you do have sore muscles.

So tried and tested, and I hope it works for you too.

Self Help: How to Look Better, Be Fitter and Lose Weight

Nowadays we have access to so many different foods. Supermarkets tempt us with scrumptious sugary offers like buy 2 chocolate bars and get 2 for free! And then there’s the super-sizing of everything (even coffee can now be bought in cups the size of  large soup bowls!).

In our fast, competitive and consumer-driven world, moderation has gone out the window. But it’s not just a lack of moderation that is the problem, as most of us are now aware, it’s eating and drinking too much of the WRONG things and not eating and drinking enough of the RIGHT things.

I believe the body is incredibly clever and as I’ve said before, it can draw fuel even from a Mars bar. However, if you only feed the body Mars bars, then things can get out of balance pretty quickly.

I think most of us have come to the realization that how we look and feel largely depends on what, as well as how much we eat and drink . Over the years, I have tried and tested all sorts of ways to keep my weight under control, as well as keeping my body healthy and strong.

Please note! If you suffer from any chronic or acute condition then it’s a good idea to introduce changes slowly, so as to give the body time to adapt! The key is to listen to your body and take note of the signals it gives you. Many times when you start ‘cleaning out’ the body goes into a bit of what therapists refer to as a ‘healing crisis’. So if you love your coffee and you drink 2 or more cups a day, then best to reduce the amount of cups you drink in stages until you have some days where you don’t drink any (I know, it’s hard – I love my coffee too). But you get the idea.

If you have any diagnosed medical condition, then of course, it’s definitely wise to take things one step at a time. Also, if you are used to consuming thousands of calories a day, then I don’t suggest you cut down too much all of a sudden. It’s just a question of common sense.

So, anyway, here are six of my tried and tested ways to look and feel better, get fitter and at the same time lose weight!

1. DETOXIFY the body of chemicals (see my previous post).

Exercise for Repetitive Strain Injury RSI2. Help ALKALIZE the body by avoiding highly acidic foods like meat, dairy, processed foods, sugar, refined flour, and drinks like alcohol, fizzy drinks and coffee (sorry!). Don’t cook at very high temperatures and use an oil like coconut or rapeseed to cook with (it breaks down at higher temperatures than olive oil). As someone said, disease cannot live in an alkaline environment.

And here’s a self help hold to balance acidity in the body: place the right hand over the left shoulder, and place the left fingers on the base of the thumb of the left hand. Reverse the hands for the other side.

3. I found out that a key to weight loss is to HAVE BREAKFAST within half an hour (and at a stretch no longer than an hour) of getting up in the morning. Do you have cereal or bread and coffee in the morning? Get rid of those empty carbs, I say!

Have a high protein breakfast (at least 30 grams). It will keep you going until lunchtime. If you can, choose foods that are not (too acidic). See a great list here of Alkaline/Acidic foods

4. It´s important to get rid of heavy metals in the body as well, and there are a couple of foods that I find very useful to do this. One is the herb cilantro or in English – coriander. I´ve read stories where including a few FRESH leaves of this herb every day for three weeks will really clean out those heavy metals. The other one is wheatgrass – preferably organic and fresh, but to be honest, I use organic powder.

5. MODERATE EXERCISE has to be included because exercise means movement and the body loves movement. It can be 10 minutes a day, but at least 4 hours a week apparently is incredibly beneficial (see post DIY Health Revolution by Dr Vincent Li). Sitting at the computer all day has been shown to increase the chances of all sorts of nasties like heart disease and stroke, so don’t do it! Get up and shake. What? Yes, you read it correctly. Shake. Stand in one position, feet comfortably apart, keep your feet on the ground throughout and start shaking your body up and down as if on a trampoline.

It’s a great way to release tension in the body and get everything moving. Otherwise, a half hour walk a day is good too.

6. Finally! MY FAVOURITE SELF HELP HOLDS to lose weight and stay fit.I have used these holds so many times. After 20 minutes of holding my cheekbones, my mind feels clearer and freer, as I let go not only of physical weight but mental and emotional weight too. When I sit on my hands for twenty minutes, I am not only getting my body fit, but this exercise releases lactic acid from the muscles (especially good after a work out so that the muscles don’t feel sore the day after) and alleviates fatigue. This exercise also tones the bottom and buttocks, ladies. It’s a lovely exercise to do for a dedicated half hour if you can. It’ll change your day!

So, for the WEIGHT EXERCISE:
Hold RIGHT Cheekbone to LOSE weight
Hold LEFT Cheekbone to GAIN weight
If you can’t remember which is which, hold both sides and the body will adjust itself to your personal needs. Yes, the body IS that clever.

For the FIT AND TONED EXERCISE:

Sit on hands (palms up)
Left Hand on Left Sitting Bone
Right Hand on Right Sitting Bone

I suggest 20 minutes minimum a day per exercise as a guide, but if you feel like doing more (i.e. more often, or longer), please do.

And of course: if you have any medical condition or are under the supervision of your physician or taking medication, please do seek advise from them before starting any program that includes supplements, a change in diet or exercise.

Back to Basics: Five Ways to Detoxify the Body

Flows for Life

Our body is a wonderfully intelligent and complex system. As I said in a previous post, all the zillions of cells require good fuel, clean water and oxygen to work optimally and maintain homeostasis (balance).  In our fast-paced modern world, our body has to work overtime to clean itself, given what it is bombarded with on a day-to-day basis. In many cases, it can’t cope and then it starts breaking down. Dis-ease, discomfort and pain are often the result.

In many cases, this overload of toxins in the body is what causes allergies  and other hard to pin point conditions. Here are five ways to start helping the body clean itself. They are in no particular order of importance, because they are all important.

1. Avoid Chemicals in Food and Drink
For a while (like a week), reduce or even eliminate sugar, caffeine, alcohol, cow’s milk, processed foods (read the labels!), pre-prepared foods (those tv dinners are full of nasty E’s!), low fat products (they say ‘low fat’ but they might have lots of sugar or nasty sweeteners), fizzy drinks and carbonated water which steal calcium from the bones, avoid low fat sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin and others are dreadfully toxic), mass-produced biscuits and sweets, fruit juices (most are concentrated and encourage very fast weight gain), wheat (most breads on the market are not fit to be called bread with all the stuff that is added to each loaf – it causes bloating, heaviness, weight gain, gluten intolerance, celiac disease), meat and poultry (unless organic).

So after all that, I hear you thinking, what do I eat then? Everything else that is not on the list above – I believe 70-80% of the products in the supermarket are not fit for healthy consumption. Go for nuts and seeds, pulses, legumes, fresh vegetables, free range eggs (good source of  protein) – if you can recognise what the basic product is, then that’s a good start!

2. Avoid Chemicals On The Body
Reduce the amount of products you use to clean and groom the body. Perfumes, deodorants, hairsprays and gels, hair colourants, body creams, shower gels and shampoos, fluorinated toothpaste etc, all have chemicals and these build up in the body and have to be processed and eliminated.  So choose, where you can, natural options. For instance, give your body a break from perfumes. Change your regular deodorant for a natural mineral deodorant stick. Instead of regular toothpaste, choose a natural aloe vera toothpaste (here in the UK  we have a brand called Aloe Dent, since using it, my teeth have stopped being sensitive). Use natural products if you can, to colour your hair (I’ve read that red hair colour is particularly carcinogenic, but unfortunately it is very popular !)

3. Avoid Chemicals In The Home and the Environment~
We are all tempted by advertising campaigns to buy, buy, buy cleaning products that will make our lives ‘easier’. The truth is, all these cleaning products are extremely toxic for the body over a period of time. Bleach is probably the worst offender. Although I have it in the home, I use it sparingly and only for very specific jobs.

4. Drink more natural still spring water to flush out toxins from the body (at least 1 liter a day!) Avoid tap water as it is recycled many times and contains lots of chemicals.

5. Speed up the deep cleaning process by practising this dynamic self help exercise every day: Main Central Source of Life

When you detoxify the body, you feel cleaner on the inside, you have more energy, you lose weight and you can think more clearly. It’s about going back to basics.

Beat Fatigue: Self Help Hold for Crossing Energies

There have been a few times in my life when I have been overwhelmed by a sudden fatigue. I have subsequently discovered that when the crossing energies in the body are overloaded, fatigue can occur.

The crossing energies go from left to right and right to left – they ‘mediate’ and ‘supervise’ the energies of the left and right sides of our body.

They also supply the whole BEING, so it is really important to keep them functioning properly.

So to harmonise and re-energise these crossing or ‘Mediating’ energies, do this exercise until you feel relief! I find it really comfortable to do this exercise lying down in bed with pillows and cushions where I need them.

The left side flow:
Place the right hand over the left shoulder. At the same time, place the left thumb over the left ring fingernail to make a circle.  At the same time, bring the knees together (this helps the ‘supervisory left energy). (see the image)

The right side flow:
Place the left hand over the right shoulder. At the same time, place the right thumb over the right ring fingernail to make a circle.  At the same time, bring the knees together (this helps the supervisory right energy).

Enjoy!

Self Help to Beat Fatigue and the Heat

Fatigue colours our world and affects how we feel, and Jin Shin Jyutsu is one of the most powerful ways to overcome fatigue.

Time after time, I have tried and tested these holds and it is absolutely amazing how my whole world can change in 20 minutes – purely because I have been able to energise myself. And if I can, you can too with this simple exercise.

The Spleen energy governs our energy levels and this exercise is very powerful for vitality and calm (one needs energy to stay calm, believe it or not!) – 20 minutes minimum every day.

The Spleen is the biggest lymphatic organ in the body and if kept happy, helps all the other organs.

In Jin Shin Jyutsu, a sequence of HOLDS is referred to as a FLOW. The following self-help flow can be used to revitalise and re-energise the whole system, and to be ‘happy and content where ever you are’. Use it to regulate the body’s temperature (to warm the body when it’s cold, to cool the body when it’s hot), and to balance the nervous system (to calm).

Hold each step for a few minutes or until you feel you want to move to the next position. Tip: put on a chill out CD and when the track changes, move the hands to the next position… The music can add a wonderful dimension to the session…

GENERAL ENERGY REVITALISING FLOW (Spleen Flow)
(Right energy pattern)
Step 1
Place Left hand on base of spine (coccyx)
Place Right hand on right inside of heel
Step 2
Move Right hand and place on left base of rib cage and hold
Step 3
Move Left hand and place on right above breast area
Step 4
Move Left hand and place on left center of collar bone

So to summarise: the Spleen flow helps beat fatigue, insomnia, headaches, anxiety and much more. It stimulates the immune system, helps the digestive system, helps regulate our body temperature (you can use it to warm and to cool the body – isn’t that great?) – this flow also helps the skin, helps beat the attitude of WORRY and well, it’s just a great general all round wonder flow – use it with HUMILITY AND GRATITUDE!

How to Lose Weight with Jin Shin Jyutsu

Now that Spring is here, many of us are looking to shed a few winter pounds…and I know that we need all the help we can get.

The good news is that there are two energy sites on the body (four if you count the right and left sides) that help with weight loss.

The first one is right under the cheeckbone on the face (energy site number 21). Hold the RIGHT side of the face just under the cheeckbone (near the nose) for weight LOSS, hold the LEFT side of face on the cheeckbone for weight GAIN. If you forget which side is which, hold both sides and the body will adjust itself to what it needs. It will! The body is very clever that way.

The other two energy sites are on the right and left  sitting bones (number 25). Sit on your hands (with the palms up) at least 20 minutes a day to stay fit, to take lactic acid out of the muscles after exercising, and to lose volume from the hip and thigh area. It also tones the body.

Both these exercises can be done in front  of the TV, or for a more meditative experience, sit or lie quietly with your eyes  closed.

Q&A: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Dysthymia

Question: Hi Astrid – I would like to make a question and don´t know how to do without coming to the ‘comment’ area. I had a diagnostic that told I have dysthymia. I would like to know what flows are more effective for that. Thank you, LM

Answer: Dear LM, thanks for your email and I hope this answer helps you. Keep working on it and let me know how you get on. Take care, Astrid

What is Dysthymia?
For those who don’t know, and I was one of them because I confess I had never heard of this ‘label’, Dysthymic Disorder is a chronic condition characterized by depressive symptoms that occur for most of the day, more days than not, for at least 2 years.
While depressed, a person experiences at least two of the following symptoms:
Either overeating or lack of appetite.
Sleeping too much or having difficulty sleeping.
Fatigue, lack of energy.
Poor self-esteem.
Difficulty with concentration or decision making.
Feeling hopeless

How can Jin Shin Jyutsu help?
Looking at the variety of symptoms, it is important that you help re-harmonise the WHOLE system. The most powerful way, and the easiest as well, is to work with the Self help Main Central Function – the Source of Life. Not once a day, but TWICE a day whenever possible. Also, you need to harmonise the Supervisors and especially the Mediator. In fact, I feel that Mediator is hugely important for you, so do this exercise as often as possible. It’ll keep your energies up. And don’t forget to hold your fingers as well whenever possible!

Below are links to all the exercises mentioned above and others for you to ‘play’ with:
